The Passage Theatre

Passage is an award-winning professional theatre developing and producing primarily new plays that raise the visibility of under-represented voices within our communities. Local to both Philadelphia and New York cities, and for 31 years a member of the Actors’ Equity Association, it has worked with both emerging and established writers including Bill Mastrosimone, Caridad Svich, Yusef Komunyakaa, Bruce Graham, Tanya Saracho, Leslie Ayvazian, EM Lewis, and Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj. 


Passage makes its home in the intimate 100-seat Mill Hill Playhouse and continues to be the cultural epicenter in Trenton NJ, bringing topically relevant theatre, dance, film, music, and youth-theatre together under one roof.

June Ballinger (Artistic Director) assumed  artistic leadership of the Passage Theatre in 1996. Dedicated to developing topical new plays for the American theatre, June has introduced Trenton audiences to premiere works by William Mastrosimone; Leslie Ayvazian; Seret Scott; Yusef Komunykaa; Russell Davis; Caridad Svich; David Lee White and others. Prior to becoming Artistic Director, she performed in many new works at theatres nationwide such as New York’s Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Actors Theatre of Louisville, Primary Stages, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, The Kennedy Center, was a founding ensemble member of the Magic Carpet Play Company in San Francisco for ten years, and was also in the original Broadway cast of Pack of Lies starring Rosemary Harris. She currently divides her time between acting and producing.
